Green Building Congress 2009

Theme: Affordable Green Buildings

IGBC (Indian Green Building Council) set out its journey to make India a global leader in green buildings in 2001.

The green building footprint achieved today is 224 million sq.ft and 347 buildings. The green building market in India is still only a trickle of the burgeoning Indian construction industry. To improve the quality of lives of every Indian, a billion green buildings are required - to live, learn, work, and entertain in a green environment. The economic downturn has made us all think hard about the value proposition of our investments. Green buildings are adopting integrated design rather than after-thought value engineering to optimize the life-cycle performance and return on investments.

IGBC`s mission is to reach out the green building concepts, services and products to every nook and corner of the country. IGBC`s engagement with all levels of the Indian industry helped spread the movement through local chapters. With 9 local chapters, today IGBC is represented in all regions of India. 530 organisations have so far committed to the green building movement through the IGBC membership programme.

Green Building Congress

A flagship event on green buildings in India, it is held in different cities every year, to educate, inform, network and unite forces for spreading the green building movement.

The local chapters assist in the organisation of this annual international conference-cum-exhibition. So far this has taken place in Hyderabad, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai and Mumbai. This year, we are back to Hyderabad. The day is not far when the Green building Congress comes to your city. Participants of the congress come to be informed, educated and involved in the green building movement. We have world-class speakers from across the globe to enlighten you on various aspects of green buildings during the international conference.

Affordable Green Buildings:

This year`s congress will chalk out a road map to make green buildings affordable for all. Today green buildings in India are being designed at an incremental cost of 6-8%. Though the initial investment is slightly higher, the benefits experienced by green buildings are tremendous, with substantial reduction in operational costs. The pay back period for the incremental cost is between three and four years.

Infact, IGBC Green homes can be designed with only architectural interventions and good design, without any significant additional cost.

The IGBC has adopted a multi-pronged strategy to address the increased costs in the construction of green buildings:

  • Facilitate Development of low cost Green Building materials and equipment
  • Enhancing the capacity of Green Building Professionals Development of New Rating Systems
  • Incentivisation through Central & State Governments
  • Involvement of Banks & Financial Institutions
